Wildfires 2026: 170 km of Motorway Taken Off the Network

A Record Season — and the Figure That Tells a Carrier Nothing

The summer of 2026 broke a record: around 96,000 hectares burned in France as of 2 September according to EFFIS, the European Forest Fire Information System, which measures perimeters above 30 hectares by satellite. Seven times the norm, and more than the previous record set in 2022. The French Interior Ministry’s own counts, which include small fires, had already passed 116,000 hectares by the end of July.

The largest of those fires started on 22 July at Saumos, in the Gironde: around 42,000 hectares. Together with the Biscarrosse fire, the Gironde–Landes complex reaches 47,000 hectares — the largest French fire since 1949, without matching the Cestas blaze.

A point of method: no consolidated end-of-season assessment had been published as of 3 September 2026. These figures are provisional.

And above all, they tell an operation nothing. The unit that matters to a carrier is not the hectare burned, it is the kilometre of network removed.

Four Days Without an Atlantic Corridor

On Sunday 26 July at 7 p.m., the A63 closed to all vehicles heading towards Bordeaux. The slip roads at Bayonne Nord (no. 6), Ondres (no. 7), Capbreton (no. 8) and Saint-Geours-de-Maremne (no. 9) were sealed off, with the motorway severed at Liposthey.

In total: around 170 km closed, some thirty entries, exits and interchanges taken out of service, across the territories of three operators — VINCI Autoroutes, Atlandes and the Direction des Routes Atlantiques. One single closure, three management perimeters, and therefore three information channels. That is why field information arrived in scattered order.

Reopening on Thursday 30 July at 2 p.m. Four full days.

This corridor carries roughly 10,000 heavy goods vehicles a day between Spain and Bordeaux. A press estimate, to be read as such: the most recent official figure — 9,000 HGVs a day at the border, in a French Senate answer — dates from 2017-2018. The order of magnitude, though, is not in dispute: this is the Atlantic corridor, one of the two structural routes through which road freight reaches the Iberian peninsula.

The alternative routes — the officially designated diversions used when an axis is cut — were published on day one: from Bayonne, the A64 to Pau, the A65 towards Langon, then the A62; for long-distance transit, the A64 then the A20 via Toulouse and Brive-la-Gaillarde; northbound, a compulsory exit at Liposthey (no. 17).

They worked. They also saturated, and the congestion was measured, not estimated: 7 km of tailbacks near Bayonne on Monday 27; 5 km and 45 minutes of delay past the Biarritz toll on Tuesday 28 at 5.45 p.m.; still 3 km on Thursday 30 in the morning, caused by lorries on the diversion routes.

Then there is the point almost nobody commented on. At the very same time, rail traffic was suspended south of Bordeaux — towards Hendaye, Dax, Bayonne, Mont-de-Marsan, Pau and Tarbes. Modal shift, that transfer of flows from road to rail so readily presented as road transport’s natural plan B, did not exist during those four days.

The Spanish counterpoint contradicts the intuition. Over the same period, Spain was burning across roughly 295,000 hectares — 45% of the area burned in the European Union in 2026 — including the largest fire in its recorded history, more than 50,000 hectares in Ávila. And not one motorway or autovía closed: at the peak of the crisis, the 52 severed sections were all secondary, provincial or local roads.

The lesson is anything but triumphal: the vulnerability of a corridor is not read in hectares burned, but in the redundancy of the network at the place where it burns.

The A6, and the Reopening That Was Not One

From the afternoon of 12 July to 16 July at 8 p.m., 25 km of the A6 were closed in both directions on the decision of the emergency operations commander, between the A6/N37 interchange, in the Soisy-sur-École area, and junction 15 at Fontainebleau. One detail is frequently misreported: the closure was north of Fontainebleau, not “between Fontainebleau and Montereau”.

HGV diversion: exit 17 (Courtenay), at Piffonds, then the A19 to Sens, then the A5 — a detour of around 80 km, our own calculation rather than an official figure. The instruction issued to companies: inform your customers and adjust delivery time windows.

First lesson, the most useful in this whole article: reopened does not mean restored. On 16 July the A6 restarted in degraded moderight-hand lane taken out of service in both directions, meaning closed to traffic and reserved for emergency vehicles, 90 km/h, no overtaking for any vehicle above 3.5 t. The damage explains why: crash barriers destroyed over several hundred metres, burned fencing, fifteen openings cut through the boundary fences by firefighters. A route plan that treats a “reopened” axis as “restored” stays wrong for several more days.

Second lesson: the road is also an ignition factor. According to the Fontainebleau public prosecutor, the main fire started at a roadworks site on the A6 verge, where an angle grinder being used to repair a crash barrier threw sparks into the vegetation. There is an echo in the Gironde, where the Saumos fire started from a brush cutter clearing the surroundings of a high-voltage power line — a use authorised at the time by prefectural order. The investigations are still running; the operational finding, however, is already in.

Across the forest massif, the French National Forestry Office put the toll at around 2,000 hectares, or 10% of the forest’s 22,000 hectares, from two outbreaks declared on 12 and 13 July.

Motorway Closure: What One Edge Removed From the Network Really Costs

Readers in the trade know every one of these cost items. They rarely see them added up.

1. The extra kilometres. The only one everybody sees — and the smallest of the five.

2. The driving time consumed by the detour. A detour does not only burn diesel: it eats into the driving time allowance, the volume of hours a driver is still legally allowed to work that day and that week. A driver who runs out of day before running out of round turns a delay into a night out — a night spent away from base, with its cost and the disorganisation it creates the next day.

3. Missed customer windows, in cascade. The first missed slot pushes back every slot after it. The round does not lose an hour: it loses its feasibility.

4. The congestion induced on the diversion route. It was measured this summer: the detour meant to save the day generates seven kilometres of tailbacks of its own. Plan B has a plan B cost.

5. Reassigning every round that used to run through there. The heaviest item, and the only one that appears on no invoice. Planner time, on a Sunday evening, under pressure.

An order of magnitude, from the work of France’s Comité National Routier: driving staff account for 35 to 40% of the operating cost of a long-distance or regional heavy goods vehicle, and non-fuel items make up 75.6% of the total cost of a long-distance diesel articulated combination. In other words, most of a truck’s cost keeps running even when the truck is not moving. The euro-per-kilometre values circulating online are, for their part, commercial estimates: the CNR publishes indices and cost-of-operation surveys, not a tariff.

Each of those items, taken alone, can be handled by hand. All five together, across an entire fleet, on a Sunday evening, cannot.

When the State Moves the Rules Mid-Season

This is the least known part of the summer, and the most verifiable: three texts in the Journal officiel in ten days.

The decree of 27 July opened a temporary derogation from driving and rest times in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, for transport required to fight the fires: daily driving extended by up to 2 hours, weekly driving by up to 4 hours, daily rest periods and two consecutive weekly rest periods reduced, with compensation. Until 8 August inclusive.

The decree of 30 July lifted the traffic ban in Nouvelle-Aquitaine for vehicles above 7.5 t carrying equipment, machinery, fuel, water tanks or any supplies needed for emergency response and forestry work. Until 31 August inclusive.

The decree of 6 August extended the arrangement to the whole national territory: suspension of the general weekend ban, from Saturday 10 p.m. to Sunday 10 p.m., and of the summer Saturday restrictions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., empty return runs authorised, supporting documentation compulsory on board. From 8 to 31 August.

One nuance it would be serious to overlook: these texts target firefighting transport, not general commercial freight.

The planning consequence, however, is general. As with the intense heat decree we discussed in relation to heatwaves and the route hours lost, the regulatory constraint moved mid-season — through successive decrees, with a geographic extension along the way. A plan built on the ban calendar published in December no longer reflected the law applicable in August, within a European framework already dense with change.

A Diversion Is Not a Plan

An alternative route tells you which way to go. It does not tell you which truck takes which round, nor which time windows have become infeasible, nor how to reload when the delivery sequence changes.

A GPS reroutes one vehicle. It does not reassign a fleet under simultaneous constraints of customer windows, driving time, vehicle capacity and the residual capacity of an axis reopened in degraded mode — the distinction we set out in detail regarding route optimisation versus classic GPS.

Let us be fair: on a single truck, a detour is handled perfectly well by hand, and that is what most operations do. The problem changes nature when the severed axis carries a significant share of the rounds.

Motorway Closures and Wildfires: What to Prepare Now

Five projects for the autumn. Now is the right time to run them, precisely because nothing is burning.

1. Identify your single points of failure. A single point of failure is a link whose loss is enough to stop the whole. What share of your rounds runs through an axis with no alternative of equivalent capacity? That question is answered on a map, in September.

2. Cost out the diversion scenarios off-season: kilometres, driving time consumed, windows that collapse. An alternative route known in advance is a plan; discovered on the day, it is improvisation.

3. Check that modal shift is not theoretical. The summer of 2026 showed that road and rail can go down together, on the same corridor, at the same moment.

4. Measure the real cost of July’s manual replanning: planner hours, delays, refused deliveries, unplanned nights out. That figure is what justifies a tool, not a sales pitch.

5. Treat reopening as a stage, not as a return to normal. Capacity takes several days to come back.

Conclusion

The heat took your hours. The fire takes your road.

And it is not the first time. In August 2025, the A9 was cut in both directions between Narbonne and Perpignan for around twenty hours, during the Corbières fire — some 16,000 hectares, the second largest French fire since 1949. In July 2026, the A63 was cut for four days. Two summers, two doors closed: both land accesses to the Iberian peninsula, one after the other.

A road network is not a fixed input to the route plan. It is a variable — and, for two years now, a variable that moves in summer.
