One on-board unit for several countries: the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS)

The European Electronic Toll Service (EETS, known as SET in France) lets you pay tolls in several countries with a single on-board unit, supplied by an accredited provider, and a single invoice.

An on-board unit only works in the countries where its provider is accredited: check the list of countries covered by your contract before setting off.

Countries on this page where an EETS on-board unit is accepted or announced

Limits to be aware of

  • Some countries still require the vehicle to be registered in advance, even with an EETS on-board unit (Poland, Czechia).
  • In Austria, a vehicle without an EETS on-board unit must be fitted with a GO-Box before entering the country.
  • In Romania, payment by on-board unit is not open yet: the announced date is given in the country profile.
  • In Hungary, no up-to-date official source confirms that EETS on-board units are accepted: check with your provider.

Romania · TollRo

How it works
Distance-based toll (TollRo) since 01/10/2026 for goods vehicles over 3.5 t, whatever their country of registration. The rate depends on the mass, the Euro class and the road type.
Network
National roads, expressways and motorways managed by CNAIR. Crossings of municipii (cities with municipal status) are not tolled.
Indicative cost
  • 0.48 lei/km — motorway (incl. VAT) ≈ €0.090/km (NBR rate of 07/10/2026: €1 = 5.3501 lei)
  • 0.24 lei/km — national road (incl. VAT) ≈ €0.045/km (NBR rate of 07/10/2026: €1 = 5.3501 lei)

12 t or more, Euro VI

Rate for a vehicle or combination of 12 t or more, Euro VI, including VAT, on motorways or expressways and on national roads. The other categories and Euro classes are in the calculator.

Paying with a foreign vehicle
CNAIR's free mobile app, open to foreign users, or a route ticket paid before departure, valid 72 h for a single trip. According to CNAIR, payment by on-board unit through European Electronic Toll Service providers opens on 15/01/2027.
Penalties
Unpaid toll: the TollRo due is claimed, or 2,000 lei if the distance cannot be established (no more than once every 12 h). After a camera check, paying within 72 h ends any penalty; otherwise, a fine of 10 to 20 times the toll due, or 5,000 lei.
Electric trucks
No exemption or specific rate for electric trucks: have the applicable rate confirmed by CNAIR.

The system's launch was hit by outages: user protection in the event of a malfunction and calls to suspend penalties are still evolving. TollRo: Romania's distance-based HGV toll — rates, payment, enforcement

Calculate the TollRo cost of a trip

The one on the registration certificate. If it is not shown there, the Euro 0 rate, the highest, applies: choose "Euro III to 0".

Tolled kilometres only, as a whole number: crossings of municipii (cities with municipal status) are not tolled. Enter 0 for a road type you do not use.

The calculator needs JavaScript. Without it, apply the rate table: rate per km × kilometres driven on each road type.

  • Electric trucks: the order sets no specific rate. Ask CNAIR to confirm the rate that applies.
  • Indicative amount, based on the kilometres entered. Payment is made in lei.
  • Rate table: order No. 1925/2025, checked on 07/10/2026.
  • Euro equivalent at the NBR rate of 07/10/2026: €1 = 5.3501 lei.

France · Autoroutes concédées

How it works
Tolls on concession motorways, set by each operator and for each section. HGVs pay class 4 (more than two axles and over 3.5 t). Two regional per-kilometre taxes have been announced: the R-Pass in Alsace and the Grand Est HGV eco-contribution (ECPL).
Network
Concession motorways only, with toll barriers or free-flow (A79). National roads and most non-concession motorways are toll-free.
Indicative cost
  • €0.25/km to €0.35/km — Rate varies by section and motorway operator. (incl. VAT)
  • Typical trip: A6 from Fleury-en-Bière to Villefranche-Limas (APRR), 430.28 km, €139.10 in class 4 (rates as of 01/02/2026). (incl. VAT)

Rates vary by section and motorway operator: there is no single cost per km. The range gives the order of magnitude in class 4, including VAT; the typical trip comes from one operator's rate table.

Announced · R-Pass · Planned for 01/01/2027

Per-kilometre tax of the European Collectivity of Alsace on the A35, the A36 and four departmental roads, from 01/01/2027. Payment by toll tag or e-ticket.

Announced rate: €0.146/km (Euro VI, over 32 t)

Paying with a foreign vehicle
Toll tag from an accredited European Electronic Toll Service provider (SET in France), bank card or cash at the barriers. On free-flow sections, payment is made online within 72 h of passing.
Penalties
Unpaid toll: 4th-class offence. The user can pay the toll plus a flat-rate charge of €90 within 2 months; on free-flow sections, the charge drops to €10 if everything is paid within 15 days. Otherwise, an increased fixed fine of €375.

It is not a substitute for the toll operators' websites or for legal advice: exact rates depend on the vehicle (mass, axles, Euro and CO₂ class), the route and the date of the trip. Truck tolls in Europe: frequently asked questions

Is one on-board unit enough to pay tolls across Europe?

An EETS on-board unit covers the countries where its provider is accredited. Most countries on this page accept it; Romania does not yet, and in Hungary no up-to-date official source confirms it. In Austria, without an EETS on-board unit, the GO-Box is compulsory.

How much does a kilometre of toll cost for a 40 t Euro 6 truck?

The cost varies widely by country and road type: the overview at the top of the page compares them. Rates outside the euro area are converted at the exchange rate shown, with its date.

Which countries on this page still have a vignette for trucks?

None for a 40 t combination: all ten countries charge a distance-based toll or a concession toll. In several of them, the vignette now only applies to vehicles of 3.5 t or less.

How do I pay tolls with a truck registered abroad?

Each country profile lists the payment methods open to foreign vehicles: EETS on-board unit, national on-board unit, app or route ticket. Several countries require the vehicle to be registered in advance.

Do electric trucks pay tolls?

It depends on the country: exempt in Switzerland and Germany for now, a reduced rate in Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia and Bulgaria, and no reduction in Romania, France and Poland.

Are the rates on this page up to date?

Each country profile shows the date it was checked and its official sources. Rates often change on 1 January: check them on the operator's website before invoicing a customer.
